As someone who enjoys the balance of creativity expressed through artwork that is not only visually pleasing but also works to convey deeper meaning and purpose, I knew Graphic Design was the course for me - especially after having visited the department in the summer of year 11.
My time studying Graphic Design has been nothing short of my expectations: despite it being a time and effort intensive course, we all receive outstanding support from our teachers and technicians who teach us the ins-and-outs, from using software to physical techniques. In my opinion, graphic design - much like other coursework subjects - is a course that requires a consistent, strong effort and the most rewarding part for me is seeing my skills improve as my work develops across both components and being able to execute tasks with increasing efficiency and attention to detail.
It is this self-discipline that has shaped my work ethic in my other subjects - Maths and English Literature - and outside of school as well. Having creative coursework paired with literature and logic has allowed me to use parts of my brain that I wouldn’t otherwise really have a chance to use. For example, the problem solving in creating outcomes in graphics has allowed me to answer problems with greater consideration in English and Maths.
Next year, I will be going on a gap year in which I hope to travel and work, before heading to university to study Architecture - a course that I believe offers a balanced mix of the subjects I take currently.
